Its tax season. This means that you will contact tax professionals or the Internal Revenue Service soon.

This also means that you will get more and more phone calls and emails during this time of the year.  However, this is also the time that scammers like to send out scam emails and make fraudulent phone calls.  Scammers pretend to be IRS representatives, but they are not.

Concerning IRS Email Scams

One of the main things that you should know about the IRS is that they do not send out emails that require you to give out your personal information.  This means that if you get this type of email from someone pretending to be an IRS official, then delete it.

For example, if you get an email asking you to click on a link to get your refund or clarify some type of filing issue, it should be deleted immediately.  This is from someone who is trying to scam you.

But on the flip side, if you get an actual postal letter from the IRS, then this is probably sent from a real IRS representative.  Get in touch with the IRS immediately.

Concerning TurboTax Email Scams

Scammers like to send out fake TurboTax emails too.  These emails look legit because they have the real TurboTax logo on them.

TurboTax claims that these scammers like to contact people and tell them that there is a problem with their taxes.  The email says that you should click the link in the email to re-file the claim.  Once again, you should never click this type of link or give out your personal information.  Click on the link and the scammers will scam you.

Basically, you should be wary of such tax emails.  Also, take advantage of the following tips in order to prevent being scammed:

1 Pay close attention to the email’s URL.  This is located in the return address bar.
2 Do not open the email if it looks questionable.
3 Keep in mind that a real agency addresses its clients or customers via a real name.
